EVIDENCE OF UNCERTAINTY / RISK

Risk avoidance can be defined as the environment in which members of a culture fear uncertainty and the occurrence of unknown situations. In cultures where risk avoidance has low scores, uncertainty is considered a normal feature of life and every day is accepted as it is; children are taught that what is different is intriguing, teachers can say “don’t I know”, and there is a certain tolerance of deviant ideas and behaviours. In cultures where risk avoidance has high scores, life uncertainty is considered a constant threat to be fought, children are taught that what is different is dangerous, teachers must always have all the answers and the general tendency is towards the suppression of deviant ideas and behaviours.
