EACEA Lifelong Learning Programme
Subprogramme Leonardo da Vinci

With the support of the Lifelong Learning Programme of the European Union.
This project has been funded with support from the European Commission. This  communication reflects the views only of the author, and the Commission cannot be held responsible for any use which may be made of the information contained therein.

In spite of the importance of culture and museums in European Union's identity and economy, the role of the cultural mediator is still undervalued. Across Europe, the Museum and Heritage Educators are highly qualified professionals with fragile relations with the employer, with very diversified academic and museum contexts, most of whom with little or none communication and education training skills.

The main goal of MuseumMediators - Guidelines for Museum Mediators professionals in Europe” - which will start in November - is to create a training course for Museum Mediators/ Educators, that represents the institutional and professional needs of Museums' mediation professionals in the European countries that participate in the project: Portugal, Spain, Estonia, Finland and Italy.

The course will be based on the experience of a previous training course tested in Portugal in  2009, 2010, 2011  with an international team of lecturers (cfr. http://museummediators.eu).

By developing this common training ground among museum professionals in the five participating countries, the project will stimulate the creation of training and professional guidelines that will sustain the work of Museum Mediation and Education officers.

As results of the project the consortium will provide:

  • Assessment of training needs;

  • Training framework with European lecturers, interactive contents that deal with horizontal and specific issues in different national settings;

  • Technical publications and website;

  • European Network of Museum Mediations and Education professionals;

  • European Thinktank;

  • Erasmus Mundus Master, based in the Polytechnic of Tomar;

  • Specific proposals for VET courses for unemployed and without formal education people, adapted to the different national settings.

The partners of the project are:

Portugal - Mapa das Ideias (co-ordinator)

Spain - University of Barcelona

Italy -  Eccom European Center for Cultural Organization and Management

Finland - Helinä Rautavaara Museum

Estonia - the National Museum of Estonia

Interarts Foundation, Barcelona (2011)

Cultural enterprises have the potential of creating values and identities by integrating cultural, economic and technological aspects; furthermore, they characterize a new economy based on creativity and innovation.

For these reasons, cultural industries have become increasingly important not only as engine of produvction but also as strategical elements for the social and economic development of societies. This developmnet process depends not only on the volume of the production but also on the organization systems characterizing the different actors participating in this process.

Within this framework, the government of Andalusia, recognizing the complex and multidimensional role of culture and the importance of cultural industries in the development of the region, has decided to implement a series of actions as part of the Cultural Strategic Plan aimed at strengthening the cultural sector.

Interarts Foundation, Barcelona (2009 -2010)

The Interarts Foundation, with support from the Spanish Agency of International Cooperation for Development (AECID) and the collaboration of the European Centre for Cultural Organisation and Management (ECCOM), carried out a project aimed at analysing tax measures currently being applied to the cultural sector in Latin American countries. The goal of this analysis was to facilitate the harmonisation of these measures, a necessary step in the framework of ongoing regional integration and trade liberalisation developments, promoting the international competitiveness of cultural industries in the region.

The project has been co-ordinated by Michele Trimarchi; members of the working group were Lorena Blasco, Serena Azucena, Sara Hevia and Maria Laura Vergelli.
